Initial: First Activity – To identify a Research Problem and review the Literature

-      Step 1:

Research is a necessary process to find solutions to identified problems. When starting this process, it is essential to recognize the reason why you want to know and identify the possible congruences of the development of said problem. Observation plays an important role, since it is key to the recognition of the context, since this allows to formulate correct hypotheses.

According to the document to develop a correct approach to a problem it is important to identify "how", "who", "where" and "when" for this reason the context where the problem is evident must be recognized, to identify the objective, the methodology, the investigative questions, once this is applied it is possible to know what the information gathering instruments and the approach may be.

After reading the text I consider that the investigation and formulation of hypotheses is an activity that becomes part of the independent professional development to the field of action. Part of the training, growth, learning, and education process involves developing analysis and observation, which in turn generates concern and curiosity for reasoning. So, it complements the understanding of concepts, contexts, and hypotheses.

1. Identifying a Research Problem:

The increase in violence on college campuses

  • You must specify your research problem in one (1) paragraph: i.e.:

Violence is one of the most evident actions in different aspects and social spaces. The affectation can be personal and social order, depending on the impact generated and to whom it is directed. The action refers to the abusive interaction to achieve a specific purpose. Usually, this imposition generates a series of sequels in the victim, as a consequence of the actions of the perpetrator, which in turn can generate unexpected response actions as a result, the damage is evidenced at an emotional, psychological, or physical level, which affects the social behavior of the affected individual. University campuses are spaces that generate an opening of socialization among students where differences in thought, choice, and tastes are permanently exposed, in this process reveal different violent actions that affect different students, either directly or indirectly violence between students is evidenced by different ways, affecting interpersonal relationships, and even affecting the moral integrity of students to the point of minimizing their academic continuation processes.

  • You must justify it in one (1) paragraph. i.e.:

Within university educational institutions, education focuses on specific points with the aim of preparing students to be active participants in society. College campuses are the first environment in which students are exposed to socialization outside of their protective family context. So, the perception of the environment shows the concepts and reactions when recognizing and identifying the difference. Education focuses on the preparation of individuals with problem-solving capacity in the application of specific concepts, but shortcomings are evident where aspects of localized violence are related. Within university campuses, the most frequent types of violence are violence against women, due to socioeconomic and racial differences. The violent manifestations are evident from verbal aggression to physical aggression.

  • You must describe the need to study it in one (1) paragraph. i.e.:

Social, psychological and cultural aspects that influence the formation of concepts and perceptions of the social ideal. In the same way, it is necessary to know the responsibility of university educational institutions in the face of this kind of behavior on the part of students and the role that the educational process plays in the individual. Gender, age, socioeconomic status, and the profession that each actor generating violence is studying are important aspects that influence the profile and analysis of the causes of this class of events. In the same way, it is necessary to know the perception and arguments of those violent students since the concept of violence and the recognition of being an incorrect and unacceptable action is clear to everyone, not only university students, it is a concept that is established by individuals from the beginning of the teaching process.

2. Reviewing the Literature

You must write at least the abstracts of three (3) or more authors related to topic to research: i.e.:

According to Gonzalez, F & Mora, B. (2014). There are two key aspects that are interrelated, generating violent actions within gender violence. Initially, the victim and the perpetrator do not consider specific actions as violence or as a trigger for future violent actions, since they are considered as attitudes that are part of interpersonal relationships, be it friendship, academic relationship, or a love relationship. On the other hand, the second aspect focuses on tolerance between interpersonal treatment, the ways of thinking of individuals have a great influence on the perception of the limits that should be established and respected within socialization, so attitudes such as Verbal disrespect, derogatory comments, jealousy, gender, or intellectual mockery are associated as part of interpersonal relationships that lose their way and trigger counterproductive actions.

Dominguez, M. (2002). Affirm the search for educational equity starts from justice. From this point the existence of economic and cultural recognition is associated. The economic recognition involves aspects such as clothing, materials, accessibility, infrastructure, etc. While the cultural aspect refers to the recognition of identity that is usually underestimated by attitudes related to xenophobia, heterosexism, or feminist or sexist perspectives. The differences within the university educational spaces highlight the inequity and the difference between students, whether in economic or cultural aspects. These factors are considered as external to university educational institutions, but despite this, they influence the appearance of events that involve violent actions among students, generating chaos and disagreement between students and the teaching body.

Human behavior is affected by a series of social factors that shape and generate the concept of the ideal in actions, considering finding a middle point where all the participating actors of a group or community do not see their rights or integrity affected. But the biological factor of the individual is due to its only attitudinal composition. Considering the affirmation of Berga, A. (2017). The capacity for aggressiveness is proportional to the capacity to dialogue, love, respect, and feel empathy for others. Violence is a human expression that is shaped depending on the cultural environment that defines it, classifying it as a social or local problem.

Unit 2 : Second Activity – To specify a Purpose for Research and collect Data.

1. The purpose of your research:

The purpose of this research project seeks to recognize and investigate the reasons why violence on college campuses is evident and what are the different perspectives involved in the argument of intolerance and the different forms of attack. This project focuses on the college campus of private character in the educational institution Universidad Javeriana considering that educational institution has the responsibility of generating spaces that creates openness to interaction with specific environments that involve personal and contextual interrelation. In addition, analyzing how during this interrelation there are social and psychological problems that involve since intolerance to different forms of aggression between students. For this research, it will be taken into account the different forms of violence from verbal, attitudinal, and physical attacks.

In addition, with the development of this research, it will be possible to make conjectures related to the different perspectives regarding the concept of violent actions, the image that students have regarding these events and how thinking influences professional formation depending on the academic area of study. The degree of responsibility that educational institutions have over the control and orientation of this kind of acts will also be recognized. Finally, it may be analyze the relationship of ideals at the individual level with group acts.

Unit 3 : Third Activity – To analyze and interpret the Data

1. Analyzing and Interpreting the Data

RESULTS

The survey about "The increase in violence on college campuses" aimed to know the different perspectives related to violent acts on university campuses since to generality, not temporal or space.  It took into account the opinion of 10 people. Who give their answer according to their personal perspectives.

With this information, is considered as 100% a total of 10 surveys.

Before the questions, is specified the gender, age, and role of each candidate interviewed distributed in:

Results Related to the profile of candidates:

The survey was answered for a group of 60% male and 40% female.

So that, the survey was answered by a group people who have a role between students, teachers, and people without no direct involvement with the university.

Results Related to the Questions.

Results Related to the First Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Do you consider that within university campuses there are manifestations of violence among students?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. was obtained as a result:

Table 4

According with the answers, 90% of the interviewees think that the manifestations of violence among students it is evident and real. This answer considering the public information in the last years, where the public and private colleges generated news whit the participation in confrontations with the police, in addition, university magazines and different public investigations has proved the real problematic.

10% do not consider the presence of violent acts on the college campuses, arguing that verbal or psychological aggressions are not generated in an academic context. According to Tapia, S. (2015) communication has exceeded spaces of cordiality to the point where the vocabulary has undergone a series of transformations where within informality and friendly ties, it is acceptable to address yourself with the use of words that could be considered violent or abusive. This phenomenon of linguistic transformation has exposed how verbal aggressions have lost validity and importance, but they continue to exist and generate major problems in the long term.

Results Related to the Second Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is If your answer is "Yes" These assaults can be:”

The question was oriented in the know the argument to the first question related to the types of assaults. For this reason, the interviewee could be choosing an option answer. The options were:

-      Verbal assaults.

-      Physical assaults.

-      Psychological assaults.

Based on the first answer; In the second question was obtain a total of 9 answers. The interviewed chose one or more answers. Was obtained as a result:

Table 5

In this case, the analysis is based considering the 100% as a total to 9 answers (taking into account that this question is based solely on the answer "yes" of the previous question). With this is possible identify:

-      The verbal and psychological assault are considered as the assaults most visible and constant in the college campuses between the students.

-      Physical assaults have a considerable percentage but does not in the same proportion.

-      Psychological assaults are the assault type considerate as a most presenting in the college campuses. It is influenced for the communication, the comments, the attitudes, and behavior  students.

-

Verbal and psychological aggressions have an association in action and in appearance as a result of the use of the other. The emotional development of the individual is influenced by external factors where the need to be socially accepted is related. According to Molina, G. & Gregóri, S. (2013) The conceptions of life and society generate an implication in the philosophy of educational models. So, the process of interaction between the individual and society assimilates norms and adaptive behaviors. During the social process, an apprenticeship of the concept and the importance of being a participating member is generated. Therefore, facing aggressions that directly violate by attacking what represents and characterizes a person individually, generates affectations that affect behavior and decision-making when seeking a solution to the attack experienced. In the same way, physical aggression is the sample of the action in response to a specific situation of danger.

Results Related to the third Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is ”Do you consider that violence violates educational spaces from the public and private in similar dimensions?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. was obtained as a result:

According to the answers, 90% of the interviewees think that the evidence of the violence is present in public and private college campuses. And, reviewing the individual answers; the 10% that consider the answer as negative corresponding to 1 person, who affirm to answer the survey without any direct involvement with the university, for this reason, his answer is based on the knowledge since the virtual apps and TV news. On the other hand, 90% of the interviewers consider to affirmative the answer according to their role and personal experience.

Results Related to the fourth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is If your answer is "Yes", You consider:”

The question was oriented in the know the argument to the fourth question related to the presence of violence in public and private college campuses. The interviewee had four statements with a multiple answer option. For this reason, the interviewer could choose one or more option answers. The options were:

-      Public universities present greater physical aggression among students.

-      Public universities present greater verbal and psychological aggressions among students.

-      Private universities present greater physical aggression among students.

-      Private universities present greater verbal and psychological aggressions among students.

Based on the third answer; The fourth question was obtaining a total of 9 answers. The interviewers choose one or more answers. Was obtained as a result:

Private universities present greater physical aggression among students.

22.2%

Private universities present greater verbal and psychological aggressions among students.

77.8%

Table 7

According to the answers. The vision of the private universities is associated with more cases related to verbal and psychological aggression among students. After to knowing the percentage obtained, the difference of this option compared between to public universities is considerable. On the other hand, is evidence like the option related to physical aggression among students is considered in the same proportion on public and private college. This type of violence does not have variation for the social factor.

The generalization of behaviors in events related to violence has been influenced by public denunciation by the media. Including the participation of students in national events such as demonstrations and marches. According to the magazine El Pacifista of the Universidad Javeriana. Marquez N. (2018). Recognizes how administrative problems, infrastructure, resource management and internal policies of the institutions influence the reaction and action of demand and coexistence of students within university spaces. Clearly, college campuses are the students' open space for student expression and manifestation. Even so, the perception of acts of violence related to physical aggressions are classified with the same proportion within the public and private space, recognizing that educational spaces generate different openings to the resolution and action against problems.

Results Related to the fifth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Do you consider, student conduct reflects aspects of society?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. Was obtained as a result:

It was evident like the interviewees recognize and consider the educational spaces like the principal place where the people express and live specific situations that show the decisions in the acts that are the result of personal and social experience.

Results Related to the sixth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Within the following statements, indicate those that you consider affecting public and private college campuses in the same way, generating spaces of violence.”

The interviewee had five statements with a multiple answer option. For this reason, the interviewer could choose one or more option answers. The options were:

-      Gender violence.

-      Socioeconomic differences.

-      Cultural expression.

-      Political thinking differences.

-      Divergence by professional areas.

These options were considered taking into account the cultural and social factors influencing the events of violence in the city according to DANE statistics in the year 2019.

Was obtained as a result:

Table 9

The results highlight a unanimous opinion regarding the influence generated by socioeconomic inequality related to the evidence of violent processes within university campuses. In addition to this, the socioeconomic difference generates different problems that can determine processes of intolerance and physical or verbal aggression. According to the coordinator of the master's degree in Sociology at the Universidad de los Andes, María José Alvarez, social difference implies certain roles in society that are reflected in university academic spaces. Socioeconomic inequality generates as a synonym the expectation of agreement in giving and receiving. Therefore, the concept of access to public or private spaces is limited to use and benefit. For this reason, the traits, and signs of violence among students intensify regardless of what is public or private. In agreement with Wilkinson, R. (2016). "Relative inequality, more than absolute inequality, affects the way we position ourselves and feel in relation to others."

Within 80% of the results, it is analyzed how the interviewees consider altercations that generate violent moments or spaces as an influencing factor, the difference in political thought. The polarization that the country suffers within the political processes has generated different perspectives in each of the citizens. Based on the individual context, personal experience, and the offer of choice with different social proposals.

The choice of gender violence as a factor causing violence on university campuses continues with 60%. It should be clarified that gender violence refers to verbal, physical and psychological attacks based on people's sexual orientation, therefore, gender violence can be focused on women, men, homosexuals, or transsexuals. Considering this, within the results obtained, gender violence is evidenced with a medium-high percentage as a visible problem factor for people. This is one of the strongest and most supportive of care problems.

Finally, with a result of 50%, cultural expression and divergence by professional areas is evidenced. According to the statistics of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the divergence of academic areas has a common denominator factor in the conception of knowledge and its free expression. In addition to this according to Ministerio de Educación Nacional - MEN (2019). The professional profile and the field of action focused on the students of university careers are determined in professional competences according to the needs of the country according to globalized development. Therefore, the curricular design must offer specific content that allows a specific development aimed at the work execution of specific areas. In short, the academic curriculum should guide the student to generate ideas, perspectives and develop a learning process according to the area of study in which they find themselves. For this reason, the divergence by professional areas is evident on university campuses and the organization of classrooms. In addition, according to Monserrate, F. (2019).

Faced with cultural expression, individual, social and cultural traits are evident. Which determine and identify groups of people. Recognizing a cultural expression directly related to the academic-professional profile of the students.

Results Related to the seventh Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Do you consider that university institutions have a responsibility to control violent acts by students on university campuses?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. Was obtained as a result:

The perception regarding the control of acts of violence within university campuses has an affirmative answer of 70%. On the other hand, the excess 30% consider that the universities have no responsibility whatsoever in such control. The image of individual behavior varies depending on the relationship with educational institutes. Considering that a process of violence within a space such as a university campus can directly or indirectly affect people who are close to or witness events of this type. Therefore, the resolution concept or conclusion varies depending on the individual concept and profile.

Results Related to the eighth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Do you consider that within the university academic curriculum, subjects with emphasis related to personal interaction should be included?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. Was obtained as a result:

Table 11

According to the result obtained from the previous questions, coherence is analyzed to the result obtained in question number eight. Where 80% of the interviewees consider an affirmative answer to the inclusion of subjects that lead students to recognize the importance and order of personal interrelation. Generational changes and technological openness have generated cultural transformations that are reflected in behavior and personal interaction. Social needs have undergone a metamorphosis of variations between norms and order. Starting from the family nucleus until becoming evident in the daily aspects that involve sociability. It is considered of great importance to retake concepts related to values, and likewise, the concept is generated that academic spaces must accept this responsibility. On the other hand, the 20% who do not consider it pertinent that the implementation of subjects of this type. It focuses on individual responsibility for the recognition of actions and its consequences.

Results Related to the nineth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Do you consider that violence on university campuses is one of the problems that social inequality makes visible?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. Was obtained as a result:

Table 12

70% of interviewees, violence on college campuses makes process of social inequality visible. This percentage is in accordance with the percentage of answers obtained in previous questions related to the factors that influenced the generation of violent acts, and the perception of socioeconomic differences. Therefore, with this result obtained, it is evident how inequality is perceived a reaction against the difference between individuals in a negative way when sharing spaces and concepts. According to the virtual magazine Las2Orillas, (2016). The processes of violence among students on college campuses increased with the implementation of the educational scholarship program “Ser Pilo Paga” proposed during the candidacy of President Juan Manuel Santos. Where the verbal and  psychological attacks against the scholarship students generated a negative impact on the coexistence between students in areas such as university campuses. Do to this, the student welfare program was seen in the need to generate support for victimized students, but it was not developed programs that will create spaces for socialization and integration. Therefore, it could be said that a process of exclusion is evident.

On the other hand, 30% consider that violent events on college campuses are not a reflection of inequality. On the contrary, they consider that these processes are the result of specific situations generated among the students.

Results Related to the tenth Question: This section gives answers related to the first research question, which is “Are the same policies within the educational facilities, of the coexistence manuals, the ones that generate voids that support violence in any of its expressions?”

The question was oriented to closed answer. For this reason, the options were Yes or No. Was obtained as a result:

The result obtained demonstrates related and comparative coherence with the previous question. Considering this, a result of 70% is evidenced, where it is considered a failure in the description of the coexistence manuals of educational institutions, which generates as a consequence actions not socially accepted since they generate problems of violence within university campuses. But, on the other hand, 30% consider that this does not have a direct relationship or an influence that is related to this class of actions, arguing that they are ignorant of the content in its entirety of the coexistence manuals stipulated by the educational entity. Therefore, it could be argued that a failure of the institution is the lack of disclosure of these regulations.

CONCLUSION.

Whit the data recompilation is possible conclude the perception of of violent acts on college campuses varies depending on cultural and personal factors. Starting with the role in front of the university. This defines their perception and answer argument based on experience. On the other hand, there is an affinity in answer where the concept of violence on college campuses is evidenced regardless of whether the educational institution is public or private, since it is understood that there are different violent events that can generate verbal, psychological and in a small proportion a physical aggression. In the same way, with the information obtained, it is identified how social differences influenced by socioeconomic factors generate gaps in interpersonal relationships, reflecting problems in society. On the other hand, it is evident that a small percentage considers that violent acts on university campuses do not reflect social factors. On the contrary, they are actions that they consider eventual.

DISCUSSION.

It is important to recognize that violence has different ways of looking at it. Violence can be generated verbally, psychologically, or physically. These three forms of aggression are related, resulting in an attack that can affect different perspectives or personal factors. The points of view related to the presence and increase of violence among students on university campuses may depend on the means by which this problem is recognized. Therefore, the media in charge of reporting on these kinds of issues (university magazines, television programs, newscasts, web pages) have a great responsibility when reporting. The ideal is to make the problem known with arguments and generate a public complaint with the aim that educational entities seek solutions to facilitate coexistence between students. Cannot be ignored the importance of the environment as part of the motivation within the learning process and the completion of academic processes .

On the other hand, it is difficult to specify exactly whether or not there is an increase in violence on university campuses, considering that with the generational change among students, the cultural change and the opening to technological spaces and tools, new forms of violence were also evident with different reasons. Socioeconomic differences especially influence private college campuses, reflecting part of the divisions of social classes and the influence of this in the interpersonal relationship. In some way, it could be said that college campuses are a small sample of the reflection of the thought and vision that one has in the face of difference. So, it can be an opportunity to generate projects focused on the integration between students for educational institutions that in turn can seek solutions.
