Step 1

Opinion about the guide

The reading "Identifying Problems and Formulating Hypotheses in Research" focuses on the research projected towards the problem and the articulation of the research. As a student I find it interesting and relevant to understand the guidelines that should be followed when conducting educational research.

It is confusing to identify and write a research problem correctly, however, it needs to be posed correctly so as not to distort the result or find negative variants in the process and this may be the challenge for us as students and future teachers.

Education in Colombia has so many problems and difficulties to overcome that with the correct vision and approach it is possible to propose a research problem real and close to our own experiences, bearing in mind different fields, questions and gaps.

"Identifying Problems and Formulating Hypotheses in Research" is an explanation and a step by step of the processes that we learners must follow to venture into the research of educational problems that will definitely be an excellent support throughout the course "Educational Research"

Step 2

Formulating the research problem

Research problem:

The lack of parental involvement in schools for students with challenging behaviors

Formulating the research problem:

Due to the lack of participation and accompaniment from parents, some students are defiant with their classmates and teachers, making the environment in the classroom uncomfortable.

Template 1

Step 3

Justification of Research Problem

Afterwards, then you had stated your research problem, you must develop the following aspects completing this:

The challenge for teachers is their students, however if students misbehave and parents show no interest in their children, this challenge may be impossible to achieve. It is important to determine the reasons why students display challenging behaviors and why parents do not show greater interest in helping them. Hill and Taylor (2004) and Trotman (2001), "showed that the low socioeconomic level of the family, the busy schedule of the parents and the low educational level resulted in a low participation of the parents". In low-income communities, parents do not intervene in their children's education and this is attributed to the low educational level and lack of income and these become determining factors for students to resort to bad behaviors and lack of interest in studies.

Good behavior and respect for classmates and teachers are necessary so that the student can spend a time of harmony at school, an affective relationship must arise between the educational communities so that a healthy learning environment is generated where the student feels comfortable and quiet, allowing you to forget problems at home. (Dr. C. Velmuruga, 2016) "People in a relationship tend to influence each other, share their thoughts and feelings, and participate in activities together. Due to this interdependence, most things that change or impact a member of the relationship will have some level of impact on the other member. "With this in mind, this impact on a challenging student is expected to be positive and reflective”.

 Step 4

Reviewing the Literature

Ricard Cuberes (2013) affirms that part of the challenging behavior of students is due to the example of parents who are nonconformist and with a challenging attitude towards teachers and the educational institution, and children imitate them by feeling supported. The family environment is important for the socialization of children, previously the parents participated in conjunction with the schools, but today they have given priority to work or money, leaving the teachers to be the trainers of the students' thinking and coexistence, then it is necessary that parents actively intervene in the social development of their children and look at education as an opportunity to positively intervene in the training of students.

According to Brown (1989) it is important that parents actively participate in the education of their children, engaging in extracurricular activities within the school and from home, but it is necessary that the teacher is 100 percent committed to being an intermediary between the two parties, understanding This requires time outside of work hours and investing extra energy in activities. A parent will also feel more motivated when the teacher not only communicates to give negative academic and behavior reports, on the contrary it is important to report the progress and achievements that the student has made, so parents will not be defensive when they are required by the school.

However, it is also necessary to help the challenging student to improve his attitude in class and against this Alfie Kohn (2004) exposes a series of steps that must be followed, the first is to identify the parameters to consider a challenging student and these should not  be judged individually by the teacher if not collectively. The second step is the DEMITIFICATION where the teacher is asked not to categorize a student as a "challenging student" for having his own and different thinking from his classmates and to avoid pointing him out in front of the class causing them to identify him as a "problem boy". The third step is to focus or redirect her challenging capacity so that it becomes a fundamentally critical opinion with respect for difference of thoughts. The fourth step is to motivate students to challenge themselves and not society, setting his own goals and showing himself that he can achieve them without challenging society. Climate and culture is the last step, where students must be offered an understanding environment, without judging, where respect for each individual in the class is promoted, where they are given comforting and positive. By following these steps, students are expected to interact calmly and without being defensive and this result will be better for the teacher because a student is unlikely to challenge him if he empathizes with him.

Unit 2: Second Activity – To specify a Purpose for Research and collect Data

1. The purpose of your research:

The purpose of this research is to investigate the reasons that lead a student to be challenging with their teachers and classmates and how the lack of commitment on the part of parents with their children is a reason that contributes to this type of behavior.

According to (Shafer, 2017)"As personal as some students can seem to make it, your first task is to change your own perspective. Children who misbehave or adolescents who act out are almost always expressing an emotion or a problem that’s just beneath the surface. The key to improving their behavior is to figure out what function that action serves and then address the root of the problem". For this reason the student researcher developed a survey based on the reflection of psychologists, teachers, and counselors, which in turn was applied to elementary students in grade 5, parents of the same grade, and teachers who teach classes at this level.

On the other hand, teaching is a complicated process in which the teachers have to win the hearts of the students and even feel themselves attached to the unruly students. This winning of the hearts occurs via interpersonal interactions. Studies have shown that the teachers who support the development of such relationships encounter less behavioral problems in their classroom on the part of the students and experience a better academic performance. (J Adv Med Educ Prof., 2018)

With this premise it is expected that by carrying out this research, it will contribute to the training of future teachers to understand and support "challenging students", identifying the causes and effect of this behavior, understanding that this type of research should be taken up periodically to deepen and update the information and data, in this way the teacher may have a foundation on which to work and support parents and students who are in this problem.

Unit 3: Third Activity – To analyze and interpret the Data

1. Analyzing and Interpreting the Data

Analyzing and interpreting the data involves drawing conclusions about it; representing it in tables, figures, and pictures to summarize it; and explaining the conclusions in words to provide answers to your research questions and purpose according to your applied survey.

You can follow this example from “Improving English Language Speaking Skills of Ajloun National University Students”, authors Samer Al Zoubi and Fadi Maher Saleh Al-Khasawneh (2016).

Analysis of results

Results

The surveyed population is between the age range of 7 to 40 years, specifically 3 primary school students, 4 primary school teachers, 1 psychologist and 2 single mothers. They are all part of the same educational community of a private school between strata 3 and 4, located northwest of Bogotá. The objective of conducting the survey with this population is to identify the educational community's perception of the importance of accompanying children by parents in their academic training.

First question

Do you consider it important for parents to be involved in their children's education?

Conclusion

According to the results obtained in the first question, 100% of the respondents agree that parents are involved in the education of their students. 30% consider that the home is the first source of knowledge and should be responsible for forming good study habits, 50% consider that parents should accompany their children so that they are informed of their progress and difficulties and 20 % think that parents who accompany their sons and daughters in academic activities strengthen their confidence, values and self-esteem.

Discussion

Although the educational community surveyed recognizes the importance of parents committing to the education of their students, the reasons may vary but the two children surveyed share the same opinion, in that their parents should know if they are doing well or badly in school.

Second question

Do you consider it appropriate for the teacher to maintain direct contact with the parents?

Conclusion

All participants agree that there should be communication between parents and teachers. Primary school children say that parents have to know how their children are doing at school, 30% indicate that this way parents can know the needs and strengths of their children, 20% of those surveyed affirm that good communication would allow them get to know their children better, 20% affirm that the well-being of students is linked to good communication between home and school and finally 30% think that it is a way of showing interest in students.

Discussion

Survey number one states that communication between parents and teachers allows it to be assertive, because when a student is being defiant, lies are part of his-her excuses to confront both parties. All answers are valid, as there must be a commitment between parents and teachers to be willing to express and listen to all observations about the student.

Third question

The teacher should not only communicate with the parents to give negative reports of the students, but also to discuss their achievements and abilities. Do you agree with this statement?

Conclusion

100% of respondents say they agree with the statement, and 90% argue that it is important to motivate the student, 10% say that parents should know the advances that their children have achieved.

Discussion

When a child feels that adults only see the difficulties or failures of their academic processes, it affects their self-esteem and he or she could be defiant. If viewed from a social perspective, when a student is singled out for his failures or attitudes is a form of discrimination that can put him in a difficult situation with his classmates. Therefore highlighting the minimum achievements or good deeds on the part of parents and teachers is necessary for the mental and emotional health of students.

Fourth question

In your opinion, Parents who are involved in the education of their children is why they love them more?

Conclusion

90% of the surveys indicate that they do consider that parents who accompany their children in academic activities do feel more love for their children compared to parents who do not help their children in the study. 10% indicate that they do not agree with the statement. 80% believe that supporting children in their education is a way of showing their interest and commitment to them, 10% consider that the work of parents can influence that they cannot help their children and 10% of Respondents do not justify their answer.

Discussion

One of the psychologists surveyed, says that he agrees with the statement "parents who are involved in the education of their children is because they love them more", but clarifies that it does not apply to all cases, since one of the factors for which there is no accompaniment of the parents because there are also internal conflicts as a couple or interfamily, however, children should be a priority within the family.

Fifth question

Select the option for which you consider that parents are not involved in the education of their children:

a) Labor obligations

b) Personal problems

c) Lack of interest.

Conclusion

40% of the respondents chose A) Labor obligations, 20% chose B) Personal problems and 40% C) Lack of interest. The two children who participated in the survey are the ones who chose B) Labor obligations.

Discussion

It should be clarified that the survey presented by the students was accompanied by the mother or father, therefore it cannot be guaranteed that the answer is 100% reliable, since in the classrooms, the students who They do not present tasks or do not fulfill their responsibilities, they state that their parents do not have time and this can be attributed to a lack of interest.

Sixth question

Who do you think should be responsible for the education of children when they are in primary school? Select an option:

a) Students

b) Parents

C) Teachers

Conclusion

The results of the surveys show that 100% of the participants consider that it is the parents who should be responsible for the education of their children in the primary grades.

Discussion

Education is the responsibility of the entire educational community, each member must do their part from their own environment, the teacher at school, parents from home and the student at school and at home. Being elementary school students, they still need the support and advice of parents, not to do the responsibilities of the children, but to verify, support, motivate and facilitate the spaces, materials and basic needs so that the student can fulfill with your objectives from home.

Seventh question

Do you think that a student who is not accompanied by the parents, can develop a challenging personality?

Conclusion

In the surveys it is evident that 60% of those surveyed consider that a challenging student may be the result of the lack of companionship of their parents, on the contrary 40% think that this is not necessarily the case.

Discussion

In the argumentation of the answer, different opinions are evidenced, one of the surveys where they answered yes, argue that the lack of companionship on the part of the parents can be a trigger for the student to be defiant since it is a defense mechanism and of wanting to attract the attention of the parents and among those who answered no, one of the teachers states that "the timely and assertive intervention by the teachers can prevent the student from taking a challenging attitude".

Eighth question

Suggest some activities that you consider pertinent to involve parents in their children's school activities.

Conclusion

Of the total number of respondents, 60% suggest parent workshops and reading activities, 20% consider that good habits should be established at home and have clear rules and the other 20% think that didactic games should be played that involve parents and students .

Discussion

In search of improving communication and strengthening the relationship between parents and children, all the suggestions made by those surveyed obviously require the commitment of parents, students and teachers to be able to carry them out. If we start from something as simple as this survey, which was sent an average of 30 people to answer it and only 6 surveys received, it can be evidenced the lack of commitment from the educational community in general for trying to actively participate and want to collaborate to make a change.

Nineth question

Do you consider that an educational institution should close the doors to a challenging student?

100% of the respondents consider that the doors of the educational institution should NOT be closed to challenging students.

Discussion

All the surveys have valid arguments where it is emphasized that a student cannot be left without the teacher's guidance and especially when they do not have enough support at home. But we can highlight the response of one of the teachers who states "On the contrary, the school must support the student, but it is important that the institution has the necessary tools to deal with this type of case, with the necessary professionals capable of providing or suggest treatment and solutions to the parents of the student in conflict. " This answer is correct because teachers may want to help all students but if the student has relevant problems, the support of a professional is required, to avoid giving him wrong advice or further motivating the negative side of student.

Tenth question

The reason why parents should accompany their children in the educational process is so that:

a) The student gets good grades.

b) For guaranteeing the student a successful future.

c) For giving your child emotional and affective stability.

Conclusion

Option C) To give emotional and affective stability to your child, it had 95% acceptance in the surveys and option B) 5%, and this is because in survey number 3, options B and C were chosen.

Discussion

The objective and motivation are clear, students, teachers and parents recognize the importance of accompanying their children during academic training in primary grades, but it is time to connect what is thought with what is done for well-being and the mental health of our students.
